Abstract
In this work formation of the very first layers of carbon nanofilms on single crystal quartz substrates is studied. Films where grown by molecular beam growth, and have been characterized by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Formation of a non-conductive carbon layer of low crystallinity on the initial stage of the growth process is reported. Ab-initio calculations with an atom-by-atom approach have been performed to explain the experimental data.
