Abstract
⺠Mountaintop mining (MTM) was compared to wind plus underground mining. ⺠Economic output was twice as high for MTM. ⺠Employment and earnings were cumulatively higher for wind energy. ⺠Including local externality costs, MTM had an overall negative net social impact. ⺠Results provide insights into why coal-producing counties are underdeveloped.
