Abstract
This article aims to identify and verify the organization levels of the main elements that make up the innovative capacity of Brazilian companies. There is no theoretical consensus on what features generate innovation along with their relative importance to business performance. In the Brazilian context, the Brazil Innovation Index (IBI) created the Department of Science and Technology Policy Institute of Geosciences, State University of Campinas, which was proposed to measure the ability of companies to innovate through a set of indicators related to Innovative Activity, Human Resources, Economic Impact, and Patents (Furtado and Quadros, 2006). Information extracted from research databases PINTEC / IBGE conducted in the years 2000, 2003 and 2005, Gazeta Mercantil and SERASA, was used and resulted in a total sample of 230 industrial companies. In order to enable the formation of the factors that demonstrate how resources for innovation are organized, the multivariate technique of factor analysis was used as the methodology. The results show that firms' efforts to improve their ability to innovate are structured in three areas: Human Capital, Relational Capital and Internal Capital, which expands the organization proposed by IBI. The research also identified that the ability of firms in Brazil to innovate is more dependent on the Relational Capital. It is possible to propose a final construct novel that demonstrates the ability to innovate Brazilian companies.
