Abstract
This paper focuses on the archaeology of period V at Monte Alban and the material culture associated with the Mixtecs in the central valleys of Oaxaca. After revisiting the historical interpretation of Alfonso Caso and Roberto Gallegos, it analyzes the terminology used by these authors and its change of meaning within recent anthropological contributions. This change not only affects the archaeological narrative but the interpretation of the processes that linked the Mixtec with the Zapotec culture.
