Abstract

A new membrane characterisation technique aiming to visualize and locate nano-sized defects is proposed. The technique characterises the membrane in a non-destructive way under ambient conditions. An automated test unit was developed based on the new concept that closely examines a leak area. The new technique greatly simplifies leak inspection of the membranes, and makes it possible to locate even small leaks very accurately. The technique was applied on tubular dense Pd-alloy membranes, and micro-porous zeolite membranes, having lengths up to 50 cm. Problems with sealings and defects in the membranes were visualized successfully by the new technique.
