Abstract
⺠A critical review of 194 studies employing pure cultures was carried out. ⺠It was found that there are three types of co-culturing. ⺠Attaining technical and economic efficiencies is the reason for co-culturing. ⺠The advantages of thermophiles over mesophiles appear to be substrate-dependant. ⺠More sustainable feedstocks must be explored.
