Abstract
► Sub-dominant bacteria influenced the global microbial metabolic network in mixed cultures. ► Clostridium pasteurianum as dominant hydrogen-producing bacteria. ► Lactic acid bacteria lowered hydrogen yield even as sub-dominant bacteria. ► Non-trophic interactions with Escherichia coli might be responsible of higher hydrogen yields.
