Abstract
The luminescence and optical absorption of Eu2Â +-doped fluorohafnate glasses in the HfF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (HBLAN) system have been reported. It is shown that divalent europium does not luminesce in the fluorohafnate glass due to ionization of excited Eu2Â +. The Eu2Â + luminescence appears after heat treatment of the HBLAN glass containing BaCl2. At X-ray excitation of the HBLAN glass the luminescence spectrum has a wide intrinsic band in the region of 250-450Â nm. The substitution of fluorine with chlorine results as a shift both of the intrinsic luminescence band and of the UV absorption edge to the region of the longer wavelengths.
