Abstract
The composition of the matrix glass has a significant effect on the luminescent property and density of the scintillating glass. In this paper, the Ce3Â +/Tb3Â + co-doped Gd2O3-B2O3-SiO2 (GBS) scintillating glasses were melted in reducing atmosphere. The effects of Gd3Â + on the luminescent property and density of scintillating glass were studied. The results show that increasing Gd3Â + ions concentration can increase the density of the scintillating glass. The energy transfer from Gd3Â + to Tb3Â + in the glass can sensitizes the luminescence of Tb3Â + ions. Meanwhile, the increase of Gd3Â + ions concentration increases the optical basicity of the glass and the electrons on the Ce3Â + ion 4f orbit are more likely to migrate to 5d orbit, which promotes the energy transfer from Ce3Â + to Tb3Â +. However, the concentration of Gd3Â + ions is too high to cause concentration quenching and Ce3Â + ion charge transfer quenching, which are not conducive to the light of the glass.
