Abstract
⺠Damaging of silica single-mode fibre with 405 nm diode lasers is reported. ⺠The damage on end surfaces is due to the generation of periodic surface structures. ⺠We suggest that the ripple structure is formed by a self-organising process. ⺠The transformation of defect centres enhances the generation of surface structures.
