Abstract
► Damaging of silica single-mode fibre with 405 nm diode lasers is reported. ► The damage on end surfaces is due to the generation of periodic surface structures. ► We suggest that the ripple structure is formed by a self-organising process. ► The transformation of defect centres enhances the generation of surface structures.
