Abstract
► Cells require enzymes to degrade both endogenous and exogenous hydrogen peroxide. ► Bacteria contain multiple apparent scavengers that vary in structure and mechanism. ► Catalase and Ahp are the only such enzymes whose in vivo function is unambiguous. ► The physiological roles of other putative peroxidases remain uncertain.
