Abstract
⺠Chronic hyperglycemia results in a non-enzymatic glycation of proteins. ⺠Glycated albumin (GA) reflects the status of blood glucose more rapidly than glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C). ⺠Number of glycation sites on GA may influence the structural and functional changes in albumin. ⺠Serum GA is not influenced by anemia and its associated treatments. ⺠In diabetic patients with advanced CKD or on dialysis, GA may be a better glycemic index and a prognostic factor than HbA1C.
