Implementation of a multi-parameter Point-of-Care-blood test analyzer reduces central laboratory testing and need for blood transfusions in very low birth weight infants

► We introduced a multi-parameter point of care analyzer in a NICU. ► We examine changes in blood transfusion and laboratory testing in neonates. ► Central laboratory testing decreased by 32% for bilirubin and for 38% for electrolytes. ► Red blood cell transfusion decreases by 48% in very low birth weight infants. ► The point of care analyzer can decrease blood loss and blood transfusions in neonates.
