► Oxethazaine is a precursor of phentermine. ► Phentermine induced significant psychological dependence and rewarding effects. ► Oxethazaine did not have any abuse potential. ► Oxethazaine metabolism to phentermine did not reach a pharmacologically active level. ► Phentermine was not a major metabolite in hair from oxethazaine abusers.
