A microcontroller based system was developed for 2WD agricultural tractors to measure and display the dynamic soil reaction against the front wheels. The device includes a transducer for measuring the tractor front end reaction, an amplifier to amplify the transducer signal and a microcontroller to calculate and display the weight retained on the front axle. The developed device can be mounted on any 2WD tractor. The digital display unit was tested in the laboratory as well as in the field. A maximum of +3.74% variation in dynamic front wheel reaction was observed between the theoretically calculated and experimentally observed values under field conditions.
► A ring transducer is developed to sense the dynamic reaction to front axle. ► A processing and display unit is developed to amplify the transducer signal output and convert analog to digital signal. ► The display unit provides safe green zone, warning yellow zone and danger red zone. ► The developed device is low in cost and simple in construction. ► The device can be easily mounted in commercial 2WD tractors.
