Abstract
Cardiovascular disease and depression are common and comorbid conditions that are associated with a poor quality of life and increased mortality. Furthermore, this comorbidity seems to be amplified in women, and there is a bidirectional relationship between these two conditions. This review explores the scientific literature and the possible bio-behavioral mechanisms that explain this relationship. Additionally, this paper discusses current efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat depression. There are different treatment approaches that include psychotherapy, treatment with antidepressants, and collaborative care.
