Abstract
The stimulation of points or areas on the scalp (scalp acupuncture) has been shown to have powerful therapeutic effects in conditions such as neurological disorders. These techniques have become more widely used, particularly after the 1950's, but they have still not been sufficiently studied to date. Conceptually, some of these techniques are based on Microsystem Theory, but others are more related to Neuroanatomy, such as the craniopuncture of Dr. Jiao Shunfa. The latter has similitudes with transcranial electric stimulation, but differs in features such as location of application points, electrode arrangement, and the characteristics of the electric current. More research is needed to get a deeper knowledge of the neurobiological basis of scalp acupuncture in order to be able to apply more efficient therapies.
