Abstract
Technological advances in the history of intensive care have led to greater survival of patients during the critical illness. It is necessary to examine the multiple processes related to the perception of the experience of critical illness for the patients and their families, and to determine the influence of factors such as corporeity, gender, race, and age of the critical patient within the individual experience in the ICU. During this review, an attempt will be made to analyse these factors from the anthropological perspective, using the intersectionality theory, and seek to determine the influence of the perception of the body, the identity of the subject, and the importance of gender as part of the search for the best forms to respond to the growing needs of critical patients, in the search to improve humanisation in the ICU.
