Abstract
Intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome are frequent problems in the critical patient. There is sufficient evidence of the unfavourable impact of these two conditions on these patients. Prevention, early diagnosis, and timely management are essential to avoid fatal outcomes. The approach of these conditions begins with the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure. This measurement is easy, non-invasive, and cost effective. In spite of this, the determination of intra-abdominal pressure is not common in ICU and, obviously, this can lead to unfavourable outcomes. This review aims to update the clinician on the frequency, risk factors, and the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
