Abstract
The prevalence rate of ergogenic substances was higher during deployment than among the military in France. However, the substances used and the patterns of consumptions reported in soldiers were similar as in athletes. The reasons for the consumption of ergogenic substances were as follows: increased workload during training, esthetics, performance enhancement and alertness enhancement. In particular, alertness was the most important reason of energy drink consumption but not the only one.
