Abstract

•We improved our definition of tensions.•We checked additional literature on value creation and distribution and improved our text.•We further clarified differences between conflicts and tensions.•We clarified our text following R1's suggestions.

SummaryCurrent literature lacks a coherent framework for analyzing how organizations can effectively deal with tensions arising in their dyadic interorganizational relationships. Our objective is to develop such a framework, focusing on two common strategic tensions: value creation and distribution. Extending the tension management literature, our framework builds on theories on structures and behavioral processes, as well as strategies for dealing with tensions. We analyze active, hybrid, and passive response trajectories to understand how organizations use structures and behavioral process to deal with value creation and distribution tensions and to examine the consequences of their stances. The conceptual paper concludes with opportunities for future research in the area of tension management and interorganizational cooperation.
