Abstract
Mitral incompetence has been associated with a lower life expectancy when developed in the context of a dilated or ischemic cardiomyopathy. In consequence, some subsets of patients could benefit from a repair or replacement of the mitral valve. Surgical indications and type of procedure are still controversial. New prosthetic rings may facilitate valve repair and ensure longer term stability of the coaptation between the leaflets, although more information on follow up is still required.
