Living with the loss: Emotional ties to place in the Vuoksi and Talvivaara regions in Finland

•We examine emotions attached to two different lost places.•We show how emotions are tied to place relations in multiple ways.•We show that despite the time difference emotions of place losses are quite similar.•We also show that emotions may last a long time and move on to the next generation.
