Abstract

In this paper we analyse the present situation of students of immigrant origin, the principles of intercultural education and both the positive aspects and the limitations of the Spanish educational system, in terms of the psychology of education. We begin with a brief description of the current situation of immigration into Spain, with particular reference to the presence of children of immigrant origin within the educational system. There follows a short retrospective review of the legislative framework and of the possibilities of educational focusing for ethnic and cultural minorities in Spain, from its inception in the 20th century to the present-day. We then summarise the particular situation of young immigrants in schools, highlighting specific problems and difficulties. Finally, an analysis is made, from a psycho-educative perspective, of current socio-political and educational initiatives and the key points of educational and psycho-pedagogical policy decisions.
