Abstract
The main result gives lower bounds for the Betti numbers of a module over a regular local ring that is obtained as an extension of one module by another when each module is a direct sum of cyclic modules each of whose annihilators is generated by a system of parameters: there are containment restrictions on the parameter ideals that occur.
