Abstract
Strategic management has become a key subject in many undergraduate and postgraduate programs in tourism and hospitality schools worldwide. However, there is a severe paucity of knowledge in the literature about the contents of the subject. This paper therefore aims to discuss what topics would be appropriate for teaching strategic management in tourism and hospitality schools. By examining current developments and debates in the field of strategic management, strategy concepts and techniques are identified and a deeper understanding is achieved. The discussion then turns to which concepts and management techniques should be included in the content of strategic management courses in order to provide up-to-date knowledge of the field. Several specific contextual challenges that can have an impact on the content of strategic management subjects in tourism and hospitality programs are also examined. Finally, the paper ends by stating a number of conclusions and recommendations for practice and future research.
