Abstract
We present a microscopic quantum mechanical theory to calculate the reduction in the band gap energy due to illumination in chalcogenides. It is shown that photodarkening occurs due to the strong-carrier lattice interaction leading to pairing of the excited charge carriers. Results demonstrate similar behavior as observed in some experiments.
