Abstract
Our current understanding of the properties of hot and dense hadronic matter is discussed with emphasis on the close connection between in-medium modifications of hadrons and changes in the equilibrium state. The latter allows for an experimental study of matter under extreme conditions through 'in-medium spectroscopy'.
