Abstract
⺠We discuss the growth of halal meat markets(s) and debates on religious slaughter. ⺠We examine how new halal certification bodies segment European markets. ⺠The tension between EU animal welfare and human rights legislation is examined. ⺠The demand for 'non-stunned' halal meat is promoted by hybrid forms of governance. ⺠The implementation of a global halal standard is hampered by market growth.
