► Underwater grinding process models based on MRR are developed. ► A 3-linear axis underwater grinding robot was prototyped and tested. ► The grinding models were experimentally validated. ► The work allows a good understanding of underwater grinding mechanism on power consumption. ► The models are intended to be integrated in a robotic underwater grinding system.
