Abstract
⺠This research examines the mechanism underlying effects of words on inductive generalization. ⺠Some argue that even early in development words are category markers. ⺠Others argue that words start out as features, but may become category markers later in development. ⺠Six experiments indicate that words function as features for preschoolers, but not for adults. ⺠Results elucidate how inductive generalization changes with development.
