Abstract
⺠We have proposed the classification of HCOs into three different types, A, B and C. ⺠The classification allows probing the relevance of the proposed catalytic mechanisms. ⺠HCOs are widely distributed in the two prokaryotic domains. ⺠Different HCOs are not confined to specific taxonomic groups or environmental niches.
