Abstract
⺠Bacterial growth pH-optima correlate with soil pH, showing the direct effect of pH. ⺠pH-optima matched in situ pH at neutral pHs but grew elevated in acid soils. ⺠We propose an explanation for this pattern: ⺠An interaction between pH effects on bacterial growth and the unimodal pH-optima.
