Abstract
► Plants use hydraulic signals for communication of changes in local water status to remote organs. ► Hydraulic signaling is very fast and in the range of meters per minute. ► Perception of the hydraulic signal triggers formation of the plant hormone abscisic acid. ► Plant sensors of the hydraulic signal are not known yet, but promising candidates are identified. ► Known mechanosensors and osmosensors provide mechanistic insights into sensor function.
