Abstract
⺠An important goal in synthetic biology is controlling gene expression by external stimuli. ⺠One of the most attractive stimuli is light, providing high spatio-temporal control. ⺠Here I propose synthetic systems in which the photoreceptor is a nucleic acid. ⺠The different tools required for developing photoresponsive RNA are reviewed. ⺠Genetically encoded photoswitches should respond to photoisomerizable small molecules.
