Abstract
► An important goal in synthetic biology is controlling gene expression by external stimuli. ► One of the most attractive stimuli is light, providing high spatio-temporal control. ► Here I propose synthetic systems in which the photoreceptor is a nucleic acid. ► The different tools required for developing photoresponsive RNA are reviewed. ► Genetically encoded photoswitches should respond to photoisomerizable small molecules.
