Abstract
⺠The chromophore in the long-lived intermediate of ChR2-C128T is a free retinal. ⺠It differs from the reduced-retro form of bacteriorhodopsin despite similar UV spectra. ⺠The photocycle of ChR2-C128T involves a transient cleavage of the retinal-protein linkage.
