Abstract
► We analysed the impact of breeding experience on female quail's behaviour. ► We compared experienced and inexperienced females' behaviour. ► Inexperienced females were more fearful when facing novelty. ► Their maternal behaviour was impaired by their greater fear of chicks. ► Chicks brooded by inexperienced females reacted more strongly to novelty.
