Abstract
⺠We analysed the impact of breeding experience on female quail's behaviour. ⺠We compared experienced and inexperienced females' behaviour. ⺠Inexperienced females were more fearful when facing novelty. ⺠Their maternal behaviour was impaired by their greater fear of chicks. ⺠Chicks brooded by inexperienced females reacted more strongly to novelty.
