Abstract
► Macaca tonkeana and M. fuscata differ in their tolerance levels as well as in play. ► M. fuscata adults played mostly with immatures, M. tonkeana adults showed no age preference. ► Gender and age differences in macaque adult play support the covariation hypothesis. ► As in humans, play in macaques reflects the nature of interindividual relationships.
