Abstract
► Being selective regarding whom and when to copy increases social-learning benefits. ► We test how rich/poor rearing conditions affect model selectivity in adult finches. ► Females predominantly copied from females with the same rearing conditions. ► Males copied predominantly from males reared in poor conditions. ► Early rearing conditions can thus structure information transfer in adult groups.
