Abstract
► We evaluated whether signal modulation is used as a mechanism for maintaining signal efficacy in Anolis lizards. ► Individuals modulated signal properties depending on the distance to intended receivers. ► Modulation occurred within the constraints imposed by specific properties of receiver sensory systems. ► Fine-scale modulation was most effective at relatively short distances.
