Abstract
► We studied effects of habitat structure and male cues on mate search behaviour. ► Female sticklebacks searched in pools containing nesting males and a social female. ► High habitat complexity reduced mate encounter rate. ► A switch from visual to olfactory cues reduced time spent searching and evaluating mates. ► Thus, the habitat changes reduced mate searching.
