Abstract
⺠How animals acquire information independently and socially is of current interest. ⺠Social learning through tandem running (i.e. one individual leads another) speeds information flow through an ant colony. ⺠It is individual learning, however, that is the basis for route improvement. ⺠Ants can achieve impressive feats of coordination by maximizing information flow.
