Abstract
► We tested auditory perception of great tits in the laboratory. ► Song detection was better for high- compared to low-frequency songs in urban noise. ► In woodland noise there was no difference in detectability. ► For song discrimination birds used aspects of the whole song in woodland noise. ► In urban noise discrimination relied entirely on features of high-frequency elements.
