Abstract
► We investigated colour pattern plasticity in variable light environments. ► Fish in turbid-like environments increased the brightness of their colour patterns. ► The simulated increase in turbidity also affected shoaling behaviour. ► Both physiological and behavioural traits maintain visual signalling behaviour.
