Abstract
⺠We review the use of landmarks for territorial boundaries in animals. ⺠Landmarked boundaries affect social interactions and territorial populations. ⺠Landmarks can have an influence by imposing a constraint or reducing defence costs. ⺠We require explanations of variation in the adoption of landmarked boundaries. ⺠The effect of landmarks on territorial populations is poorly understood.
