► Social relations between territorial neighbours may be affected by third parties. ► We show that aggressive third parties evoke moderate responses by close eavesdroppers. ► Males also use information from neighbour-stranger interactions in future situations. ► In conclusion males condition their vocal behaviour on their neighbour's situation.
