► Closely related species of carpenter bees reduced competition for nest sites through spatial partitioning. ► Both species (Ceratina mikmaqi, C. calcarata) experimentally preferred the same nesting substrate and site. ► Microclimate influenced offspring fitness while nest substrate did not.
