Abstract
► We studied the effect of deliberately altered voice pitch on vocal attractiveness and dominance. ► Sex-atypical alterations in pitch decreased vocal attractiveness. ► Sex-typical alterations in pitch did not affect vocal attractiveness. ► Lowering voice pitch increased perceptions of dominance in same-sex judgments. ► Perception of altered voice pitch may mitigate potential costs of using an alterable cue to assess attractiveness.
