Abstract
⺠Game theory models of animal contests differ markedly in presumed cognitive ability. ⺠Cognitively complex rather than simple models have been commonly favoured. ⺠We find little evidence that animals compare relative abilities. ⺠Information about own displays may be impossible to gather hence precluding comparison. ⺠We propose a two-dimensional state space model that accounts for motivational change during contests.
