Abstract
► We compared navigational abilities of polygynous deer mice and monogamous California mice. ► Male deer mice outperformed conspecific females and California mice in a Barnes maze. ► Performance of male deer mice was related to their ability to assimilate spatial clues. ► Our results provide insights into the evolution of sexually selected cognitive and behavioural traits.
